Eight percent of the weighting: bolt and rivet identification, self-locking nuts, safety wiring rules, torque and preload, heat treatment, the forces on materials, weld quality and precision measurement.
Where people lose points
- In an AN bolt number, the first digit is diameter in sixteenths and the dash number is length in eighths of an inch.
- Two raised dashes on an AN bolt head mean aluminum alloy; a triangle means close tolerance.
- Fiber elastic stop nuts are not used above 250 °F, and one that turns by hand is replaced.
- With an in-line extension, the torque wrench must read LESS: wrench reading = desired torque × L ÷ (L + E).
- Safety wire is always new, pulls in the tightening direction, and widely spaced bolts are wired three at most per series.
